In a past life, she was bathed in sweet dew; in this life, she repays it with tears. When Cao Xueqin wrote of Daiyu, his pen always carried the scent of medicine. The bitterness of the Ginseng Nourishing Pill, the absurdity of the Jealousy-Curing Decoction, the scent of that bowl of medicine swallowed on a snowy night. This scent must be bitter—that is why angelica is used. The root, simmered to perfection in the medicinal cauldron, is mellow yet astringent, like that hint of salty bitterness one tastes when a tear slides to the lips

But Daiyu was never merely bitter. She was the one who taught Xiangling to compose poetry; she was the one who declared, “Pure in essence, I come and go in purity.” Thus, the narcissus was chosen to embody her—the green hue at its base, faintly pungent, crisp and clear to the core. Her integrity is the sharp edge hidden beneath her delicate frame.

She came to this world to repay her debt of tears; let us, in turn, repay her with a stick of incense.
