This is a work created during the traditional
Chinese festival of Qingming Festival. It depicts
what I witnessed and experienced when returning
to my hometown in the county mountain to visit
the graves. My ancestors had no names; instead,
some repetitive geometric symbols were used to
represent their clan. Their graves were
submerged by the river over a hundred years ago
and sank to the bottom of the lake. Now, after
the lake water has receded, they are located
beneath a small hill. There are small and rough
wildflowers growing there. Our custom is to clear
the weeds, burn colorful paper money, and
repaint the red painted characters on the
tombstones. I have brought back all the
memories’ scents
